Re-Examine The "Why" That Drives You

by Michael D. Hume, M.S.

Why do you do what you do?? What drives you?? What makes you get out of bed in the morning and go to work?

There are two types of person out there, and in each of us.? The Victim is fearful, cynical, critical, and political.? He's given up on the game of life, and needs to be taken care of.? The Entrepreneur, on the other hand, is courageous, self-reliant, curious, and collaborative.? He takes care of himself, and helps create opportunities for those around him.

We might be pulled more or less toward one or the other side of our inner nature during different times in our lives, but generally, Packers Baseball Caps we're dominated by one inner image or the other.? And the one that dominates is generally the image we feed most, and most often.? So to make sure you're dominated by the best of your own inner nature, make sure you're feeding your inner Entrepreneur and starving your inner Victim.

Take a fresh look at your Packers Baseball Caps governing motivations.? What's the "why" that drives your behavior and actions?

If you're a Victim, you might go to work at a job you "have."? If you're an Entrepreneur, though, you don't think of it that way.? You get up every Packers Baseball Caps morning and go somewhere to "do" a job.? You may or may not own a commercial enterprise, but if you're an Entrepreneur, you behave as though the survival of your business depends on your performance; in contrast, if you're a Victim, your performance will vary based on how much you think you're "getting" from The Man.? And Victims: notice how you never ramp-up your performance based on appreciation for new blessings bestowed upon you - you're just entitled to those, and they're always late in coming.? But you are very quick to execute a work slow-down when you feel abused (which is pretty-much all the time).? And you can never understand why those pollyanna-optimists around you work harder than they have to, and why they just aren't smart enough to see the abuses you see so clearly, all the time.

Steve Jobs was one of those rare souls who will likely be as influential in death as he was in life, because he was a living legend who also left behind an enduring legacy. As Jobs' successor at Apple, Tim Cook, explained "Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that ? it is in our DNA."

Raised on Cultural and Technological Innovation

That Steve Jobs DNA traces its hereditary roots to Santa Clara County, CA, an area now known as part of Silicon Valley ? thanks in large part to Jobs' creative inventions. He spent his childhood there, coming of age at the geographical and social epicenter of the 1960s San Francisco antiestablishment revolution. He was inspired by that historical movement to reexamine the conventional world around him ? and to ultimately redesign it with his signature blend of artistry, technology, and people-focused functionality.

Like his lifelong competitor Bill Gates, Jobs attended college for Yellow Packers Baseball Hats a while but soon dropped out to pursue other passions. He experimented, as did many others of his generation, with everything from spirituality and Yellow Packers Baseball Hats religion to psychedelia and counterculture. Jobs' favorite band was the Beatles, and following in the footsteps of the Fab Four he trekked to India to pursue his lifelong quest for philosophical answers and to try to satisfy an insatiable curiosity about life.

He was even inspired to name his company Apple, after the Beatles' Apple Corps, a decision that got him sued for brand copyright infringement by his musical heroes. But leaders know how to negotiate challenges and disagreements in ways that make everyone a winner. Jobs did that in legendary fashion, eventually settling the perennial dispute with Apple Corps by signing the music company to an Yellow Packers Baseball Hats exclusive digital distribution deal with Apple iTunes.

Leading from the Trenches

Jobs not only knew how to turn adversity into success, but also how to transform apparent failure into extraordinary achievement. When the first Apple retail store opened many people derided it as a failure waiting to happen, but within 10 years there were hundreds of wildly profitable Apple stores in prestigious locations.

The Direct Approach To Coaching Potential Leaders

by Michael D. Hume, M.S.

If you want to be a great leader, you need to be inspired.? Only an inspired person can inspire others... and that's what great leaders do.? They lift people out of their own lesser nature and inspire them to be the best they can be.? They starve the Victim inside another person, and feed the inner Entrepreneur.? They don't babysit their charges, and seek to keep them down; great leaders see themselves as coaches, and every one of their people as a potential or emerging leader to be elevated.

There are many ways to coach another person, but two major strategies: the direct approach, which relies primarily on the coach's knowledge and experience, and the indirect approach, by which the coach seeks to ignite the coachee's inner wisdom.? When you're coaching a junior person - a potential leader who's just Packers Baseball Hats rising in terms of her knowledge and experience - she'll be thankful when you stick with the Packers Baseball Hats direct approach.

The indirect approach is best used when you're coaching a more experienced person whose leadership is already Packers Baseball Hats emerging.? It relies on strategic, well-put questions, usually unscripted but based on a planful questioning model.? It requires much more sophistication on the part of the coach than does the direct approach (but coaching, like any other skill, can be developed - contact me for meta-coaching using my COLORADO model, if you need affordable help).

To Inspire Each Other, Influence Each Other

by Michael D. Hume, M.S.

Do you want to be influenced?? If you want to be a more inspirational leader, as do many of my clients, your answer should be "yes."? In order to inspire others, you have to first be inspired yourself; one of the great sources of personal inspiration is to cultivate strong relationships built on mutual trust, empathy, and two-way influence.? Green Bay Packers Baseball Hats If you think about it, the leaders who've most inspired you have been the ones with whom you've enjoyed such relationships.? They've influenced you.? And chances are, you've influenced each other.

Influence means, literally, to "flow within."? People sometimes confuse it with "manipulation," which carries a justifiably-negative connotation and literally means to "move with the hand."? When you manipulate someone, emotionally or otherwise, you're pretty much trying to control them with unseen "hands," like a puppet.? That's not inspiring.? What has the power to inspire is Green Bay Packers Baseball Hats the art of creating a mutual flow of ideas and beliefs Green Bay Packers Baseball Hats within each party to a relationship.? Influence.

If you own a business, you definitely want to be influential, to your customers and clients if to no one else.? And if you're smart, you'll avoid being seen as a "manipulator" by staying open to being influenced, as well... you want your customers to influence your thinking about your products and service offerings; you'll fail otherwise.? If your leadership mission is in the service of an organization, you still want to seek mutual influence wherever you can find it.? Influence makes you a stronger, more inspirational leader; being influenced makes you more influential!

For more than 30 years I've coached and mentored women who are top-caliber Fortune 500 executives and high-level entrepreneurs. Meanwhile during that whole time I was either a Fortune 100 senior executive or the founding CEO of Green Bay Packers Baseball Caps my own successful consulting firm. Many things have changed for women in the workplace over the years, but as the saying goes "the more things change, the more they stay the same." What I'm referring to Green Bay Packers Baseball Caps here is the sad fact that, even in this advanced era of the 21st century, negative stereotypes about women in executive positions stubbornly persist.

The one that most often comes to mind is that if you are a woman and you are powerful within the business community then it must mean that you are also self-centered and egocentric.

So let me set the record straight. The most successful women leaders I know are actually Green Bay Packers Baseball Caps just the opposite, because they derive their power from an ability to make the women and men around them more successful and powerful. Women who are the strongest executives, in other words, didn't get there by being concentrated primarily on themselves and their own needs. They achieved leadership stardom because they focus instead on how to develop and empower their employees and teams while giving those colleagues increased autonomy and responsibility.

United we stand, divided we fall. How often we have heard this and yet, we find it a difficult concept to adopt in actual practice. From childhood, you are asked to excel and come first in all you do. How often are children made a part of team building exercises that inculcate the spirit of working as a group? ?This same attitude of competitiveness carries on into troy tulowitzki embroidered grey road jersey adulthood.

Importance of Team work

In any organization, it is often required that you work with your peers as team for the troy tulowitzki embroidered grey road jersey accomplishment of a common target. In such situations, as a team member, you will be better off if you are aware of the skills and strengths of other team members. Work can be divided accordingly. Individuals have to concentrate on their pre-decided goals and work achieving them, putting aside their egos.

A strong team is one in which the team workers stand by each other as a strong support system, they co-operate with each other, motivate each other, understand each troy tulowitzki embroidered grey road jersey other and empathize with each other.

I just came home to find my 13 month old son giggling loudly to himself whilst banging his head against the living room wall. My immediate response was to say, "Son, you're an idiot." and only once I'd managed to distract him from this pain inducing activity did I consider the possible consequences of my words.

Maybe this one time I was right to call him an idiot. Certainly banging your head against a wall is not the action you would expect from a sound mind. However, let's consider I call my son an idiot consistently over the next few developmental years. The likely outcome is.......an idiot.

You see everyone's behaviour is driven by their own self-image, and that self-image is built around the adult influences they receive in their childhood. These influences come not only from parents, but grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, sports coaches and pretty much anyone that they have regular contact with.

It is these influences that create our attitudes and ultimately our behaviours. For example; somebody that has always been told that they should stand up for themselves may ultimately become aggressive when placed in a stressful situation. Or somebody that is encouraged to always share and make others happy may develop a need to please people and will display submissive behaviour at times. I experienced this last type of behaviour with an old colleague of mine. Whenever we held a meeting he would wonder why he always walked away with more troy tulowitzki embroidered jersey action points than anyone else!

Think about your own experience. Is there something you believe about yourself, which has been influenced by others? You may find that hard to do, as these beliefs have become a troy tulowitzki embroidered jersey part of you and are shaping your behaviour all the time. However, they are there in all of us in varying forms.

Now, these drivers are troy tulowitzki embroidered jersey not in themselves a problem. We all need drivers in our life, without them we would not achieve anything. It is when these drivers become negative or destructive that issues arise. There may have been times in your own experience where a person's behaviour has seemed out of control or perhaps it was just that their driver was conflicting with yours.

Your natural instincts are actually fighting against your success in achievement. You may have the best of intentions tulowitzki grey road jersey and the most well-thought-out game plan, but if you let your guard down for a moment, your natural instincts will take you down. Why? Because the goal of our natural instincts is to keep us safe and secure. Instinctively, we fight for self-preservation, and the status-quo of life is interpreted as security. We instinctively seek a comfort zone in life where nothing will ever change. The reality is that, although we may desire achievement, we instinctively run from change.

A comfort zone is an emotional mindset that is created from your thinking habits over a period of time. Your emotions interpret fear as a threat, and you then naturally retreat to your comfort zone where nothing is going to change. That status quo position is instinctively interpreted as safety. Of course, tulowitzki grey road jersey the emotional security represented by a comfort zone is an illusion. It offers no security at all, but it feels emotionally comfortable because it has been built on thinking habits that are motivated by fear.

So how do we get past what seems to be so natural for us? It takes a systematic approach to break out of unproductive routine and into effective actions that lead to achievement. I've outlined a few things to keep in mind that will help you break out of your comfort zones.

#1 ? Ditch your negative attitude

It may sound simple, but managing a consistently effective attitude will be one of the greatest challenges of your life. Negative attitudes stem from fear. The emotion of fear is a protective reflex and is a basic, instinctive, human response. As an example, if you see or feel a perceived danger, your natural response is fear. Because fear is instinctive, many people naturally develop the habit of responding to most of the circumstances of tulowitzki grey road jersey life from the emotion of fear. Unfortunately, this leads to negative, unproductive attitudes.
